[Article] Jang Keun Suk considers leading role in new SBS drama - 2017-12-22

The biggest news of the last week: JKS has been offered and is considering a leading role in a new SBS drama, "Peacock King" aka Operation King. The most recent media reports state that JKS is still considering the role. The drama is scheduled to air in March of 2018.

Jang Keun-suk considers becoming ‘Peacock King’

Updated : December 19, 2017

Actor Jang Keun-suk is considering a return to TV screens after two years away, with the upcoming SBS series “Peacock King” (working title), local media outlets reported Monday.

Tree J Company confirmed the actor was recently approached by the production staff of the drama series, but they are still reviewing the proposal.

If Jang takes up the offer, he will play the part of a swindler who is smart enough to prepare for the bar exam, but chooses not to become a prosecutor.

Since the character in the series is not an actual prosecutor, the swindler arrests criminals that commit crimes beneath the radar of police, including politicians. It is said the main character will take on two roles.

Jang has focused on his career in Japan after being cast in SBS historical drama series “Jackpot” (2016). With his possible return to Korean television, industry insiders expect the upcoming series to receive considerable attention.

It is also the first time director Nam Tae-jin, of “Temporary Idols,” distributed via Netflix, will tackle a mini-drama series.

“Peacock King” is scheduled to air on SBS next year.

Note: Per media reports on Dec 21, JKS is still deciding upon accepting the role. If he chooses to accept, he will star opposite actress Go Hyun-jung. Peacock King is written by Bae Woon-cheol, author of 'Suspicious Maid', and Nam Tae-jin PD, director of 'Temporary Idol', another SBS drama in conjunction with Netflix which aired in Korea in November.

Per AsianWiki, the main character, which is the role JKS is considering, is a "man [who] is a swindler. He is smart enough to take the bar exam, but he could not become a prosecutor. Disregarding favoritism and biases by prosecutors, the man makes criminals pay for crimes that prosecutors did not." As such, JKS would play a man leading a double life, the most notable of which is as an avenger. This is the kind of role that JKS has said he'd be interested in playing: suspenseful and action packed. But whether or not he accepts the role will depend, most probably, upon how well the script is written and the views of the director (PD) on the drama. JKS needs a ratings winner drama so it's certain he's considering this role very carefully.
