[Article] Jang Keun Suk's Military Service Date Surmised in DramaFever - and a Response - 2018-04- 05

On April 2, 2018, DramaFever published an article- copied below - in which the autho said Jang Keun Suk will sign up to fulfill his military service this year, probably by July 25th.  Jang Keun Suk, as DramaFever correctly pointed out, stated that Switch - Change the World will probably be his last drama before fulfills his obligatory 21 month-plus military service.

Jang has stated on many occasions that he believes it is his honored duty to fulfill his military service and he will do so gladly. Whether he joins the Army (21 months of active duty), or the Navy or  Air Force (24 months of active duty) remains a mystery that only Jang knows...and he's not saying.

But DramaFever, however,  erred in a few facts.

First, Jang Keun Suk's actual birth date is Sept. 25th. His mother chose to use the lunar calendar for his birth date, rather than the Gregorian calendar which we all use. The lunar calendar puts his birth date at August 4th. But in fact, his real birth date is more than a month later. That six to seven week difference became the reason why Jang Keun Suk celebrates his birthday over such an extended time period each year.

Second, college students have until they are 35 - not 29 years plus 720 days - to enlist. Jang Keun Suk, according to Korean age standards, just turned 31...so he still has plenty of time left before he must enlist. Especially needed, since he has yet to complete his PhD in Film and Theater at Hanyang University.

Third. One thing is clear, Jang wants to complete his doctoral program classes before enlisting. Given the date he entered Hanyang's Film and Theater Doctoral Program, immediately after his Bachelor's graduation, and the amount of time he's spent studying and producing short films for his classes, it's highly likely, although not assured, that by the end of this term, he will have completed all PhD his requirements. Nevertheless, he still must complete his thesis project.

A few fact on PhD candidates...

For film and theater doctoral candidates, that project usually amounts to a full length film production of a quality that could be shown in film houses. Given Jang's experience with his two independent short films, Budapest Diary and Camp as well as hi two award winning short films, it's not unlikely that he fail to write, produce and record a film that wins the hearts and minds of his department's judging committee. Nevertheless, Jang has several years to complete this final project. In the US, PhD candidates are given up to five years to complete their final PhD project. The same requirement exits in Great Britain. So, likely, So. Korean universities follow suit.

Conclusion

Regardless of all the pro- and negative hype about Jang's military service, he has stated over and over again for years that he is "of" Korea. He is a product of Korea. He loves Korea, first and foremost. Thus, he will fulfill all of his required duties to his country as well as those which are not required, in whatever ways his country needs and wants of him. Just as in the past when he was asked to give his time and efforts for major Koren public service campaigns.

Jang Keun Suk will enlist before the year ends most likely...and whether he chooses to so quietly as many other Korean male celebrities have or be more public, no one knows. Nevertheless, those who stand beside him, as the tremendously talented actor, singer and MC he is, accept whatever choice he makes, knowing it's the right one for Korea first and then himself.

Korean actors leaving showbiz for the army is an inevitable reality and actor Jang Geun Suk is no exception. We predict he will serve no later than July of this year, and here’s why.

As some of you may already know, Jang Geun Suk’s latest drama Switch premiered last week. During the drama’s press conference, he alluded to the subject of enlistment.

“I think this drama will be my last [before the military]. So there’s a greater responsibility. I’m doing my best when filming each scene to create a character of [a] lifetime,” Geun Suk said, adding that he had wanted to film more often (“one to two dramas a year”), and that he’s the happiest when performing in front of a camera.

Korean men must enlist no later than their 30th birthday. However, Jang Geun Suk’s is a special case. Geun Suk, 30, is currently in a performing arts doctorate program at Hanyang University. Since he is a student, he can delay enlistment up to 720 days from his 29th birthday under military law. He was born on August 4, 1987, and, assuming that he delayed the entry on his 29th birthday in 2016, the last day he must enter the army is July 25, 2018.

Switch will probably end by mid-May, but Geun Suk might join the army in the middle of his drama, like My Sassy Girl’s Joo Won did.

Last month, the Daebak actor treated 2,018 fans to a Paralympic ice hockey game.

What do you think of Geun Suk joining the army soon?
